A Good Boss

Take a deep breath in - did you feel that? That’s life, the one God prepared ahead of time, flowing into your body. He didn’t make a mistake, and He didn’t forget to add or subtract anything from you.

Some days you feel like a winner; like everything you touch turns into gold. Your kids behaved at the dinner party, your spouse remembered to do the dishes (without needing to be asked - a minor miracle), and Christmas went off without a hitch.

Other days you feel just the opposite. Your body hurts. Your kids don’t sleep, and they scream that high-pitched animal caught in a trap scream for no reason. You don’t have money. Your car isn’t running. Your family fights at dinner time, and then on Facebook, and then over the phone.

And here you are; somewhere in the middle. Some days are good; some days are terrible.

It can be easy to forget that you’re set apart - designed to be different. You see, you’re not really from here. You’re just on an extended business trip. As a Christian, you’re here to do a job - and your worksite may look different from day to day; or even from hour to hour.

I understand that it can be frustrating to work in the pouring rain, digging a ditch with a broken plastic spoon, and then you look over at someone enjoying a nice cup of cocoa and working leisurely on their movie script.

I can’t tell you that your job will become easier. I can’t tell you if you’ll get a new assignment in 2022. But, I do know that you have a great boss.

Your boss has done the job you’re doing - he knows how hard it is to dig a ditch in the rain with a spoon. He also knows how frustrating it is to suffer in silence while others live oblivious to the struggles in the “real world”.  Your boss cares about you. He cares about your family. He cares about your work/life balance. He cares about your salary and benefits package.   Sometimes it seems like he’s too busy in his office, going over spreadsheets or doing major project planning. And he is; He’s very busy. He’s always working. He never sleeps.

But he’s not too busy for you.

So next time you’re ready to give up, imagine this: Your boss comes up to you, on the worst day of your working life - you were late, your attitude sucks, and you’ve been telling everyone that you’re about to quit. He sits down in the mud next to you, and pulls out his own broken spoon, and starts digging the ditch with you. “You’re doing great work, man. This is a tough job, but I knew you were the right person to do it. Nobody else could have made all this progress. There’s still a long way to go, but I’m always here to help if you need it.”

You have your boss’s personal cell phone number - you can call him at any time. He will always answer the phone. His answer might not be what you expected, or what you wanted, but you know he’s a good boss.

God is a good boss. He’s the best boss. He’s worth working for, even if the job you’re doing isn’t fun. Imagine the alternative…
