Obedience

I had a friend in college who would pull up to the menu to order and pray to The Lord, “Lord what should I order?” My response, just like so many people’s response, would be to scoff or mock this person for asking what they should order. But was it the correct response?

Let’s take a look at Jesus’ life in scripture and see if we can find the right answer to that. John 8:28 says, “So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.”  This scripture gives a specific window into Jesus’ life in the fact that what The Father taught Jesus. The language can be a little misleading as we would take it that Jesus was just taught once as in past tense. But this word in the greek is, to teach. This implies that yes, Jesus was taught, but is still being taught.

John 5:19 says, “Jesus gave them this answer: "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”  Wait; so, the scripture says that He only does what He sees the Father doing. Whatever The Father does, The Son does also. So, how obedient was Jesus?

Philippians 2:8 says, “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”  So, if Jesus was so obedient that He was willing to go to the cross, how obedient are we supposed to be?

I’m going to be honest with you. There have been points in my life where I wasn’t even willing to be obedient when The Lord gave me a word about someone and I was unwilling to go and share with that person. I’m thankful He has changed that. I’m thankful He continues to work on me. I’m thankful for the continued work of obedience He is drawing out of me.

Okay, just one more! You talked me into it. Romans 5:19 says, “For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.”  Our salvation was brought forth through His obedience; Our way to be one with The Father.

How much more are we supposed to be obedient to The Father? Are we not supposed to ask what The Lord wants us to order from that menu? Are we not called to the same obedience? Now, I ask you, do you scoff at that man with the menu? Or would your choice be to honor him through that obedience to The Father.

I pray for your obedience to grow in The Father.
