But Do You Know His Heart?

But Do You Know His Heart?

I listened to a young father share about what God was showing him through his four year old little girl and it has really stuck with me.

He said, “My little girl knows her way around my house. She knows what my voice sounds like and she recognizes my face easily. But she doesn’t know my heart yet.”

He continued to explain that her fits of resistance showed her misunderstanding of her father’s heart. As her father picked her up in the backyard to bring her inside the house she screamed uncontrollably. She didn’t know that her father simply wanted her to put a coat on so she could enjoy being outside longer without catching a cold.

Many of us are familiar with God’s church and have beheld the beauty of his face in worship. We may even be keenly aware of his voice. But, do we really know his heart?

I believe that our response to disappointment reveals the answer to this question in our lives. Paul warned Timothy that many have been shipwrecked in their faith because they didn’t hang on to God’s word spoken over their lives. His word over your life will always reveal that his heart is to prosper you and not harm you (Jeremiah 29:11).

What do you do when something in your life goes unresolved for years and years? I have found that the seemingly small thread of my faith is made invincible when I rely on God’s heart toward me. I think we all love the verse “You will keep those in perfect peace whose minds are stayed upon you” (Isaiah 26:3). Whenever I read that I have always resolved that I would only think about God so that I could have perfect peace. I discovered there’s a catch. The end of that verse says “because he trusts in me.” It is not about trying to obsessively think about God.

You gain perfect peace when your heart actually trusts in him as you fix your eyes on him. I challenge you to ask him what his intentions are toward you. When he reveals that, anchor yourself in the truth that your redeemer lives and his heart is to prosper you. Then at least if you do still throw a fit, your faith won’t be shipwrecked :)

May his grace be upon you,
