New Year, New You

This time of year everyone is focusing on the new. The new year always brings excitement, anticipation, and reset. It’s only natural, I guess, for the focus to be on the new; it's fun, it’s exciting, it’s new…

New is good, there is nothing wrong with the new. As Christians we are made new, we are all new creations through Christ, “the old is gone the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17) The old in this case was not good, it was so bad in fact that new had to come for life to come. New is good when new is what is needed.

But what about those things that aren’t bad, that don’t need to be replaced by the new? Should we replace everything with “new”?

So many times I believe that we try to replace everything old with the new. Some things are better when they are not new, some things are supposed to be “old”, have longevity, be familiar, grow. I think that our culture is so drawn to the new, that they miss out or don’t understand the benefits of “old”.

I think that because we are made new we can forget that God is ancient, that His ways are ancient, and that though many things are new to us, they are not new ways. In fact they are ancient ways. Psalms 119:52 says, “I remember, Lord, your ancient laws, and I find comfort in them.” Our God is not new and he is not old, He has always been. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

Let’s remember as we begin this new year to let what is meant to be new to be made new, but also to grow in, honor, and be excited about the old too.
