Seek Wisdom

Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

To me this verse has been confusing for most of my life, with me asking different people that I have trusted to explain to me what it could mean. Yet, i never got a really clear answer, until i just put my eyes to the paper of the Bible and kept reading.

A big part of my life has been a promise from God that came in college that if i sought and studied wisdom, I would gain it. PROFOUND I know! But it never occurred to me that this wisdom He was talking about, although offered freely to EVERYONE, is often left by the wayside for much more; What we would perceive as much more extravagant things, such as gifting that can be used and executed in front of people. But what I have learned is that this wisdom has played a much bigger role in my life than I would have ever imagined.

So, anyways, back to the story. I kept reading! In Chapter 2 it answers this! (Just a little background, the fear of the Lord is just saying the reverence of The Lord or interchanged with the knowledge of the Lord)

Proverbs 2:2,4-6

“2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding; ... 4 If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; 5 Then you will discern the fear of the LORD And discover the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth [come] knowledge and understanding.”

So, by scripture, The reverence and knowledge of The Lord is the beginning of knowledge, because if God speaks to you knowledge AND understanding, it is coming from His mouth. If you have no reverence or knowledge of God, how then can you have knowledge and understanding about the things of Him or His Kingdom.

Sure, you can have knowledge through textbooks about this world and things of this world, but what good does that do us when it comes to things of God? You can gain knowledge about God from other people that God has taught, but what good is knowledge without the understanding that is supposed to accompany it directly from the mouth of God.

The beginning of knowledge starts with knowing Him. Then after knowing Him, we then will be imparted with the knowledge AND understanding, which then produces fruit in our lives. All from knowing Him. Fools don’t just despise wisdom and teaching. They despise Him, because that is where real knowledge and understanding start.

So I seek wisdom and turn my ear to it and gain knowledge and understanding from God who, when sought, gives it freely.

Take time, listen, know Him, know His kingdom, know His will.
