Don't Be Stuck, Be Trained Up

“Hebrews 5:11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.”

Ouch, that hurts me a little bit. Well, at least the pride in me that says I’m pretty quick to learn. The truth is there are some parts of my life that I learn quickly in, but there are also some parts of my life that I take an incredibly long time to grow in. But, as I have read and prayed through this passage of scripture, I want to share with you what He has shared with me so we can grow in Him and that no one is left behind in any part of their life. Let’s take a look at the further passages in this chapter.

“Hebrews 5:12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!”

Okay, two interesting things that have come up so far; In verse 11, it says, “you no longer try to understand” and in verse 12 it states, “you need someone to teach you the elementary truths all over again.” Two really big statements here about someone who is apparently stuck in elementary things unable to get out of the “cycle” of spiritual infancy. To these people, they are told only to consume milk… not meat. Let’s keep learning

“Hebrews 5:13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.”

Okay, now we are getting somewhere. We are stuck in a cycle of infancy, needed to be taught elementary truths all over again. Let’s be clear, the infancy cycle we are stuck in is the spot of salvation. We have been saved, not knowing much other than Jesus is now Lord of our lives. We then begin to learn the basic things about christianity; But it says in verse 13, “we are not acquainted with the teaching of righteousness.” Which is why we are stuck in infancy and why we can’t grow.

“Hebrews 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”

So, we no longer try to understand - 11, which then sends us into forgetting about simple things and needing to be taught over and over again the simple things - 12, Which produces a cycle of infancy - 13, never to be left because of our unwillingness to try to understand - 11.

So our cycle looks like this…..

Salvation - new learning - not trying to understand - not applying - repeat.

But somewhere in infancy we have to move from infancy and milk to maturity and solid food. 14 gives us a clue when it communicates, “who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil”. Constant use - Application of things that we have learned will advance us into maturity. Then we will be eating solid food. Understanding, Application, and Use will get us to maturity.

“Hebrews 6:1-3  Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.”

I like how the scripture gives us a peek into what the subjects of the mature are about. As it says in verse 2 “instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement. These are, I believe some of the topics of the mature. But some of these I never even heard in a Sunday sermon from the church. I only began to hear about these subjects when I attended Bible School. This is not to be so. These are to be taught freely for all to mature into and learn about.

So, join me church as we get unstuck, and we run after Him and Him alone. Let our starting place be in the place of the mature and not of the stuck cyclical infant who desires nothing more than milk and milk alone. Remember as it states in scripture, to mature, you must want to try to understand, you must apply the understood to your life, you then must continue and continue and continue, constantly use and hearing from Him……
